Best controllers for Nintendo Switch
Joy-Con, Pro Controllers and third-party pads — and which ones work on Switch 2.
The Joy-Con that come with your console are clever but small. If you play on a TV or for long sessions, a better controller is the upgrade you will feel most.
What works with what
| Controller | Switch / Lite / OLED | Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Joy-Con (original) | Yes | Yes, wirelessly (they don't attach) |
| Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Yes | Yes |
| Joy-Con 2 | No | Yes |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller | No | Yes |
| Third-party controllers | Usually | Check the listing says Switch 2 |
Nintendo states the Switch 2 Pro Controller and Joy-Con 2 are only for use with Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
The comfortable all-rounder for Switch 1 owners, with motion controls, rumble, amiibo support and long battery life. It also works with Switch 2, so it is a safe buy if you might upgrade.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
Made for Switch 2. Adds two rear GL/GR buttons you can map to any button, a C Button for GameChat and a 3.5mm headset jack. Only works with Switch 2.
Third-party wireless controllers
Much cheaper and fine for a second player. Before buying, check the listing for:
- Motion controls — some games need them.
- Rumble — often simpler than Nintendo's HD Rumble.
- Wake from sleep and amiibo (NFC) — often missing on budget pads.
- Switch 2 support — many older third-party pads were made for Switch 1 only.
Small upgrades
Thumb grip caps make any stick easier to control, and a charging station keeps spare Joy-Con ready for guests.
